• It's a fun and educational way to enjoy a hobby where anyone just thinking about getting into the hobby can learn or the seasoned koi keeper can share their knowledge
• It's a good way to meet people who are interested in all things related to koi, including the koi history, koi identification, koi pond construction, koi water quality and filtration, and koi health and happiness.
• It's nice to be able to call someone for advice who is not trying to sell you something! The Koi Club of San Diego has a support system of volunteers who have been raising and tending ponds for many years, and are happy to help. Our online monthly newsletter provides helpful details.
• It's fun to be part of the Annual Koi Show and to be able to show off your "living jewels" while rubbing elbows with other enthusiasts.
• It's nice to be able to participate in the Annual Koi Auction where you can purchase koi from other club members and/or perhaps sell your koi that are looking for a new home.
• It's fun participating and attending our monthly meetings that are generally held at members' homes, each with a new venue. Meetings are a wonderful way to socialize while gaining knowledge from guest speakers as well as getting new ideas. The club has been doing this since 1984!
• It’s nice to know which vendors, local and/or online, provide the best quality products; and which ones offer discounts to Club members.

In 1984 a few koi hobbyists in San Diego came together to form an organization based on their shared enjoyment of these beautiful fish. Since that time the club has grown to over 120 families and our mission has evolved to include education of our members and the public on all aspects of koi keeping, to promote the koi hobby, and to become a part of the larger community of koi enthusiasts throughout the country and the world.

Monthly meetings are generally held on the second Sunday of each month at members’ homes; and we invite you to join us if you have an interest in koi or are considering a pond. Typical programs at these meetings  include: how to select young koi, what to feed your koi, pond filtration systems, water plants, and many more koi topics. Our members, who are always willing to share their knowledge with others, range from beginners building their first pond to experts on water quality, pond construction, koi health, and selecting koi.

The Koi Club of San Diego's annual open koi show is one of the largest in the United States, with as many as 350 koi competing for awards before a prestigious international team of judges. At the show people come together not only to celebrate the finest koi but to renew friendships with koi keepers from around the world. The koi show is the major event within each year, but we are an active group and also take part in koi rescue & rehoming, koi auctions, potlucks and pond tours. Some of us even travel around the country to visit other koi clubs and koi shows to present friendship awards or enter our koi in their shows.

Our club is a member of the Associated Koi Clubs of America (AKCA) which is a network of over 75 clubs. AKCA trains and certifies koi judges, supports the research of koi health issues, holds an annual Wet Lab open to all club members, and used to publish the magazine, “KOIUSA.”
